Historical Record
This is the second-ever meeting between Kentucky and Youngstown State on the football field. The Cats previously hosted the Penguins on September 17, 2022, pitching a 31–0 shutout. Kentucky enters Saturday 6-0 all-time against Missouri Valley Football Conference opponents.
The Program
Youngstown State is no cupcake. The Penguins are a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) power — a legitimate FCS program that made the playoffs last year and is a dark horse contender to make noise again this season. This isn't a patsy Will Stein is facing in his head-coaching debut.
2025 Results
Youngstown State finished 8–5 overall and 5–3 in the MVFC last season. They earned an FCS playoff berth before falling in a 43–42 First-Round thriller against Yale. It was a heartbreaker, but it proved this program possesses playoff-level talent and resilience.
The Quarterback
Beau Brungard is the engine of this Youngstown State offense. The senior was named MVFC Offensive Player of the Year after becoming just the third quarterback in FCS history to post 3,000+ passing yards and 1,000+ rushing yards in the same season. He threw just 3 interceptions all of last season while combining for 50 total touchdowns (26 passing, 24 rushing). He's mobile, poised, and rarely beats himself.
Offensive Firepower
All-American left tackle Desmeal Leigh anchors YSU's physical offensive line. The Penguins averaged 36.6 points per game last season — elite production. They rushed for 203.8 yards per game and passed for 256.2. That's a balanced, physical attack that doesn't waste possessions. They opened their 2026 campaign last week with a dominant 43–10 victory over Mercyhurst.
The Defense
This is where Youngstown State has questions. They gave up 31.0 points per game in 2025. They're not a defensive powerhouse, but they have key pieces — edge rusher Mike Wells is an All-Conference returner, and they added several transfers to shore up the front seven.
Head Coach Doug Phillips
Phillips is in his seventh season and holds a 31–35 record at YSU. He's a builder, not a flashy name — methodical, disciplined, and focused on execution.

What To Watch
Youngstown State is FCS, but they're FCS at the top tier. They beat Mercyhurst 43–10 to open their season last week, so they already have full-contact reps under their belt. Brungard's playmaking ability is real, and their offensive line holds its own. Will Stein needs a strong statement win in his head-coaching debut. Youngstown State wants to prove they can contend with SEC speed. Expect YSU to string together a few drives early, but Kentucky's SEC depth should pull them away in the second half.
