Good morning, Big Blue Nation! Thursday, August 27. Welcome to Big Blue Dispatch Daily Number 100! Thanks for reading!
Let's start with some good news. After Tuesday's SEC statement regarding eligibility, the Herald-Leader got a big scoop on Wednesday and it appears to be good news for Mark Mitchell. The Mizzou forward's path to suiting up for Kentucky has been cleared by conference officials. Mitchell will (probably?) be eligible to play this season, ending weeks of uncertainty around his status. Mark Pope's roster just got the confirmation it needed — Mitchell is (probably?) coming to Rupp, and he's (probably?) coming ready to play from day one.
But wait — there's a wrinkle. CBS Sports' Matt Norlander is reporting that Mark Mitchell's eligibility to play at Kentucky as an intra-conference SEC transfer is under renewed scrutiny and in doubt after SEC presidents reaffirmed their conference's policy on intra-league transfers. Mitchell finished his senior year at Mizzou in the spring but didn't enter the portal then because there was no expectation he'd transfer. He entered the portal last Friday with a do-not-contact tag and committed to UK less than 24 hours later. The SEC is apparently readying to treat Mitchell's transfer in a secondary/delayed window as falling under the terms of its previously agreed-upon bylaw — which would subject Kentucky to the same harsh penalties the conference just finalized. UK will obviously fight to get Mitchell on the roster and argue that the option for him to enter the portal in the spring didn't exist, but the legal battle may not be over just yet.
Speaking of the SEC, the conference has finalized harsh penalties for rostering former professionals. Sankey's crackdown is already taking shape, and schools will have to be careful about who they bring into the portal.
File under "be careful what you wish for" — Eric Crawford on power conferences wanting self-governance. The conferences got what they asked for. Now comes the hard part of enforcing it.
