Daily Update • August 31, 2026

Good morning, Big Blue Nation! Monday, August 31 — welcome to the workweek. Hope you had a great weekend.

Let's start this week with a contest for a free Big Blue Dispatch coffee cup! Send us your pick and final score for this Saturday's UK/Youngstown State game. The reader who picks the winner and is closest to the actual score wins a coffee cup. But wait, there's more — everyone that enters gets a free gift (nope, it's not a sticker). Send your address, pick, and final score to contact@bigbluedispatch.com before kickoff on Saturday.

WDRB's Eric Crawford has a good article on Coach Stein's transformation from assistant to head coach. Stein has remade Kentucky's program from the ground up — new staff, new scheme, new culture. Now comes the hard part: proving he can win games and build something sustainable. Crawford dives into the changes Stein has made and what they mean for the Wildcats heading into his first game.

Alex Afari isn't giving up on suiting up for UK this year. The linebacker is taking his 5th-year eligibility fight to Louisville court on Monday. Afari believes he has a case, and he's willing to fight for his chance to play for the Wildcats. The legal battle continues, and a favorable ruling could give Kentucky a major boost on defense.

The Kentucky Kernel has a good article on UK volleyball's win over South Florida and Craig Skinner's 500th career coaching victory. It's a milestone moment for a coach who has built one of the most consistently dominant programs in college volleyball.
