Good morning, Big Blue Nation! Sunday, August 9 — we're 27 days away from the start of UK football.
KSR has some takeaways from the first three days of fall football camp. The physicality was there in the first practice with shoulder pads, but it was smart football — no knuckleheads taking cheap shots. Tovani Mizell, the overlooked Georgia commit who's finally healthy, has impressed Will Stein through the first three practices. Jason Patterson ran hard on Friday, and the overall competition at running back is raising the level of play. The offensive line is creating running lanes, and tight ends Shane Carr and Brock Coffman made an impact blocking downfield. On the interior line, Jordan Knox is showing versatility playing both center and guard, forcing his way into the regular rotation despite Tegra Tshabola being limited by a minor procedure.
The Herald-Leader has a couple of good pieces as well. Five position battles could be key this fall. Wide receiver is wide open with Nic Anderson injured, leaving Shane Carr, DJ Miller, and others to compete. Offensive guard features Tegra Tshabola (limited early), Olaus Alinen, and Jordan Knox pushing hard. Inside linebacker has Grant Godfrey locked in with Bo Barnes competing alongside him. Jack linebacker features Sam Greene returning from injury with Cowan and Works as options. And kick/punt returner is the most open battle of all, with Ty Bryant, Martels Carter, Kenny Darby, and Jason Patterson all in the mix with no clear favorite.
Earlier this year, the Herald-Leader had an inside look at the $3M renovation for the weight room, and now they have an insider's view of how that facility is being used. Brandon Roberts, UK's director of football performance, has implemented a "contenders and pretenders" board that displays the top five and bottom five performers in power output during each workout. The system uses high-tech machinery to measure velocity and wattage, creating internal competition. Players like Antwan Smith, Jaden Williams, and Ty Bryant have been consistent standouts. The board has created a culture where nobody wants to be exposed, and team leaders like Willie Rodriguez and Bryant are using it as a motivational tool. The setup appears to be working — team captain Ty Bryant noted the measurability means "you can't get under the bar and not go 100%."

The Herald-Leader has some thoughts on what we might have learned from the last UK practice. Mark Pope's impromptu open practice at Rupp Arena on Thursday revealed plenty. Milan Momcilovic was steady and impressive from all three levels in his first time on the Rupp court. Malachi Moreno was steady on both ends with particular praise for his defensive intensity. The Diallo-Wilkins backcourt showed excellent chemistry with both hitting shots and playing tough defense. Freshman Mason Williams impressed as a potential third point guard option, showing poise and defensive awareness. Jerone Morton, seen as a depth addition, continues to lead the "Winners Board" and showed intensity on both ends. Braydon Hawthorne had some highlight plays near the end of the session that kept the intrigue alive about his potential. The biggest question mark remains Ousmane N'Diaye's ability to stay in position on both sides of the ball.
Let's close out today with UK Soccer. Both the men's and women's soccer programs kick off the 2026-27 athletic calendar tomorrow with Fan Day at the Bell Soccer Complex. The women play Lexington Sporting Club at 5 p.m., with the men facing Northern Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will have autograph sessions afterward. The women open their regular season Wednesday, August 12 against Detroit Mercy, while the men start August 20 against Western Michigan. Admission to all regular season home matches will be free to the public.
