Good morning, Big Blue Nation! September 1 — welcome to UK kickoff week and Labor Day weekend coming up.
The big news of the day: Mark Mitchell has reversed course and will stay at Missouri instead of transferring to Kentucky. After weeks of legal battles and uncertainty, Mitchell has decided to remain with the Tigers. It's a stunning turn of events for Kentucky, which had been fighting hard to get Mitchell eligible and on the roster. The door has closed on this one, and Mark Pope will have to look elsewhere to fill that roster spot (if that's even possible at such a late date).
Alex Afari is still waiting for a resolution on his 5th-year eligibility. The linebacker's legal fight continues, and there's no clear timeline on when a decision will come. For now, Afari remains in limbo — eligible to practice but not to play in games. Kentucky's defense is counting on clarity soon.
Sports Illustrated says that UK better watch out for Youngstown's QB. While the Penguins are a heavy underdog, they have an elite quarterback who can make plays. Will Stein's defense will need to be disciplined and ready from the opening kickoff — there's no room for sloppy football, even against a supposed pushover.
